Saddleworth Musical Society (SMS), a non-auditioned SATB community choir of 50-60 singers based in Uppermill near Oldham, is currently seeking an enthusiastic new Music Director (MD) to work alongside our accomplished accompanist to take the choir towards its 70th anniversary and beyond with effect from October 2024. This is a remunerated position.
SMS is well regarded locally and has a long tradition in performing 3 events a year covering a wide variety of music including choral, musical theatre, opera/operetta and popular light music.
The successful candidate will be someone who

• Is an experienced choral conductor
• Has a clear understanding of vocal technique (particularly with regard to the more mature voice)
• Has good communication skills
• Is able to challenge the choir with new ideas and repertoire
• Has had some experience of conducting an orchestra/band and working with soloists
• Is keen to work in a collaborative manner with the accompanist, choir and committee
• Is able to develop the less-experienced while also engaging the more accomplished
• Has a sense of humour!
• Is keen to help encourage the recruitment of new members and has ideas relating to this
• Ideally, has contacts with other singing and instrumentalist networks.
